Riccardo Tsci, chief creative officer of the luxury fashion house Burberry in the UK, draws inspiration from British seasides for his spring/summer collection 2023. The collection is inspired by the seaside, and then recontextualised in London – Burberry’s home and heart. It embraces both the idealism and the realism inherent to a quintessential British approach.
According to a Burberry press release, the British temperament and temperament of its people inspire a concept that embraces the notions of layering. This is a way of revealing and concealing the body and of clothing with dynamic potential.
Swimwear’s body-conscious designs influence the shapes of dresses that are elongated and are even carved in the garments. Burberry trench coats and denims have been deconstructed, allowing for more space on the body.
The Britishness of the past is reinterpreted with new eyes and a different perspective. A Gothic figure in full black dressed on summer sands, the surreality and absurdity of an evening dress on the beach or a rose, the symbol of England, stripped down to its thorns are all examples of the incongruity.
In summer in Britain, the beaches are a place for democracy and community. People from all over the world can enjoy simple pleasures together. I wanted to bring that idea – that feeling – into an entire collection. I wanted to express the spirit of togetherness, joy and reality. The collection was inspired by the beach, as a place of humanity meeting, where different worlds meet,” said Riccardo Tisci, chief designer.
“That tension, between dressing and undressing, between revealing and protecting, between underwear and outerwear all feels relevant and part of Burberry’s modern DNA. We explored a new sensibility – a body consciousness – this season. I was inspired by youth’s openness and liberation, and how they embrace their bodies. They are proud of who they are and their identities. Their freedom. This feels modern and right.
